Sinusitis is an inflammation or infection of the air pockets on either side of and behind the nose. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, molds and possibly by allergies. Sinusitis causes mucous to build up in the nasal cavity obstructing breathing through the nose.
People with sinusitis who do not respond well to medication should consider undergoing surgery. Nowadays, doctors can perform a sinus operation with the help of a slender nasal telescope. The method is known as Nasal Endoscopy. The procedure is performed entirely. Through the nostrils so that no incisions are made on the face.
However, endoscopic sinus surgery is a challenging and demanding surgical procedures since openings to sinus cavities are narrow and are surrounded by important organs like the eyes and the brain.
It enables surgeons to remove polyps and other obstructions in the nasal passage more effectively. Patients also experience less discomfort.
Computer assisted surgery (CAS) systems have now been introduced into endoscopic sinus surgery. The technology enables surgeons to obtain data from CT scans before surgery. It also enables surgeons to see the nasal passages and the affected areas on a TV-like screen, helping them to perform the operation more safety and precisely.
